Cats and dogs alike are prone to contracting heartworm disease if proper heartworm prevention measures are not taken. If you believe your pet has heartworm, or if they need medication as a preventative measure, contact Farview Veterinary Hospital to speak with our practitioner. Here is why it is important to continuously provide your pet with heartworm prevention measures even during the cooler parts of the year.

Weather Is Unpredictable

Heartworm disease is transferred to pets via infected mosquitoes. Because of this, eliminating mosquitoes around the property during warmer months of the year is a must. During the wintertime, many people believe their pet is safe from being bitten by a mosquito. If the weather warms up, however, mosquito eggs that were laid before the cooler weather settled in could hatch.

Skipping Medication Could Cause Disease

Unfortunately, if your pet isn't provided with monthly medication to prevent heartworm from happening or you miss a dose, a problem could arise. If pills are not taken each month, your pet is not protected from the possibility of contracting heartworm disease.

Heartworm Prevention Measures

It is best to make an appointment at our animal hospital to meet with our veterinary team if you have concerns about heartworm disease and your pet. Our veterinary team will check over your dog or cat's health for potential problems and make treatment recommendations as necessary.

If your pet is already suffering from heartworm disease, we will provide you with tactics to minimize symptoms in cats (since heartworm disease is not treatable for them) and eliminate the disease in dogs. If you wish to start heartworm prevention for your pet, we will provide you with dosage instructions and prescription medication.
